An area of scientific study that originated little more than a century ago, psychology is a field that has expanded very quickly and which comprises multiple subdisciplines. Three key areas of psychological study are presented below.
1. Biological psychology. This area of study involves researching mental functioning and behavior by investigating the influence of the nervous system and brain on biological processes underlying normal and abnormal behavior.
2. Health psychology. Focused on how biology, behavior, and social elements affect well-being, health psychology investigates how illness can be prevented and how diseases begin and take course.
3. Industrial and organizational psychology. Concerned with the development of effective behavior in the work environment through the application of psychological concepts, industrial psychology seeks to solve issues such as securing the most appropriate employees for particular roles and designing consumer-friendly products.
