A fashion consultant advises and helps clients make fashion decisions. As a fashion consultant, you would typically work in a fashion company, a retail clothing store, or as an independent consultant. Based on a client’s tastes, body type, and budget, you would recommend fabrics, color palettes, individual pieces, entire outfits, and accessories that suit their style.
You don’t need a college degree to be a fashion consultant. However, having one could make it easier for you to advance in your career, as most employers and potential clients like working with someone with credentials to prove their fashion expertise and skills. So, a good place to start is to earn a degree in fashion design, textile design, fashion merchandising, or any other fashion-related field.
On top of your degree, it will help to acquire professional certifications such as Certified Image Consultant (CIC), Certified Image Professional (CIP), and Certified Image Master (CIM) to further prove your fashion expertise. As you pursue your degree and professional certifications, get as much work experience as you can. You can start with an internship and work your way up. As you gain experience, make sure you network with other fashion professionals who can help you establish your career.
